Back in the Wack

Hey y’all, my name is Eugenie Schieve, and I’m a junior environmental studies major! I crossed in 2013 with the Spice Girls, and I’m also a member of BONESQUAD. Preseason was the best preseason yet! Things have running smoothly this year as we prepare for our first home game against Lamar on September 12th. TBS and KKPsi have been hard at work introducing new traditions that will hopefully continue for years to come! On Tuesday morning, we greeted the band with breakfast tacos from none other than FUEGO! We even started a photo contest for the band. The results were spectacular!

Here is one our winners (that’s also my trombone, so I’m feeling pretty proud)

Friday night we had our spirit rally, and we even got a photo of (almost) all of Girlsquad*! I’m so lucky to have my beautiful sisters, Megan and Charity with me in the section!

*Bonesquad + Girls = Girlsquad. Creative, right???

On Saturday, we had Noche! This was our second Noche at McLane Stadium, and it was just as fun (but still super hot)! The directors were able to give us a nice long break, and we had the pleasure of touring the Baylor locker room, while we cooled off! I even got to show off my awesome guns inside the locker room! Clearly service has its rewards :)

Now that I’m an upperclassmen, I'm seeing the vast amount of work that is required for the band to function and succeed. I’m so thankful that TBS and leadership allow me to play a greater role than ever before in the band. I will never forget the memories I have made with my brothers, sisters, and friends.

An Unconventional Experience

With my sisters I am best! This statement became so true to me during my wonderful week at National Convention, in Lexington, Kentucky. I was able to learn so much about our awesome sisterhood, as well meet some great people and make some great friends.

The week started early-3:30 Monday morning came around and I began my journey. Flying across country from my little state of Montana, I arrived in Kentucky, to be greeted by an Iota Alumni, and my grand-big Heather McGowan. I was then able to say a quick hello several of the districts councilors from across the nation, including our one and only Erika Pope. The week continued on with wonderful workshops, and countless opportunities to meet sisters and brothers and make new friends. I was also able to see the National Intercollegiate Band, the Boston Brass, and Pat Sheridan with the Lexington Brass in concert. All of the performers were exceptional, and it was so exciting to listen to these wonderful groups surrounded by musicians who valued the beauty of music.

The week continued with even more workshops, and some really late nights, also some sidesplitting laughs, and heart-warming moments. Come Thursday I was had the privilege to go to champs with Heather and some good friends from the Southwest district and play a couple wicked games of miniature golf, and laser tag (of which I failed miserably at, but had loads of fun). We didn’t keep score, but I did get one hole-in-one so I count that as a win!

Another extremely memorable experience was seeing ritual done by the National officers, which was so amazing, and I even got to see Past National President and Iota Alum Janet West Miller perform the closing. It was a heart-warming night where I felt the closeness and beauty of the organization in a totally new way.

Next in line came elections! Whew those were quite an experience! The southwest district had a very informational and productive caucus into the wee hours of the night, followed by an early morning of elections and committee reports. Which was exciting because Iota got into the national minutes as the second for the acceptance of the national constitution! We then an intense election of officers, where I was able to see our dear district councilor Erika Pope elected and installed as National Vice President for Communication and Recognition. This was so special for the entire southwest district and it was so cool to be there while it happened.

That same night was the banquet, where I was able to see our own Karen Miller Hammond win a National Award. I really enjoyed my time with Karen her husband David and our dear Janet. Janet has a fun story any time you see her and both Karen and David are very sweet and happy people. I can’t explain how special it was to get to share my first NatCon experience with all of them. It felt so special to share a Sic Em with Janet, Karen, and Heather; I can’t express how full of pride for my school, chapter, and organization it gave me!

The dance was then so much fun! I really enjoyed spending time with my southwest district friends, and I was even taught some steppin moves!

Overall it was an awesome experience and I value it so much! I huge shout out to Heather for making this possible! I love being a member of Tau Beta Sigma, and I am so excited to start out the year at Baylor with my sisters! And hopefully take all of them with me to Orlando, Florida National Convention 2017!!!
