Mr. Snow, Meeting, and Noche! Oh My!

8/31/2011

It has been a busy last few days here in Iota! I'll try to keep this short and sweet, but I'm gonna have to back track a little bit.

Last Wednesday after band the sisters of Iota took a few of the band people to Mr. Snow to get some snow cones.  It was baller.  This has been an official rush event in the past, but the last couple of years we've made it more of a chill and hang out sort of thing.  Snow Cones. Chill.  Get it?
Picture

Oh, and when I say "a few" I actually mean "a whole freaking bunch."  The line was not short.  Unfortunately some freak dirt storm happened towards the end of our snow cone eating and kind of ruined the flavors.  Strawberry Dirt Storm snow cone is not something Mr. Snow is going to start selling anytime soon.

Then we had the weekend and with the weekend came joint meeting!!! ....

... Then real meeting!!! Where the Beau got to come in and say hi for the first time for the semester!  Yay!  Everyone say hi to Figgy!

He was so cute and excited about being in meeting!  Check out the cute erasers that Becky brought for everyone.  She did this last year too and I thought it was just as awesome, so I thought I'd share it with the internet. What is it with Tau Betas and turtle shaped things?  Why can't we ever seem to get enough? c:

Last but definitely not least, NOCHE!!!

Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi arrived about an hour early to start setting up, and then everyone was ready for their favorite multi-hour rehearsal of the year! Because on the second week of school who really has anything better to do from 4pm-10pm on a Monday than band? "Not I!" said the Golden Wave Band member!

Everybody loves Noche!  Can't you tell from all the productive work faces?

Nerd Herd!

It was the first spirit day of the year - NERD DAY! And as most you might have assumed Iota REPRESENTED like no ones business! Isn't it funny how on every other day of band everyone tries to wear the least amount of clothing possible, but on the hottest day of the week (110 degrees outside) we decided to wear our button down shirts, tall socks, and long shorts?  We have spirit, yes we do!

And last but not least.... (my favorite picture from all day because its so cute...)

Sara and her fiancé Zach! Aren't they so cute dressed up the same? I just couldn't help but post their nerdy picture up.  c:

We had almost every classic "nerd" element present from the clip on tie, to the suspenders, to the tall socks, and the dork glasses.  It was awesome. Personally, I think everyones nasty sweaty armpits added to the nerd costumes quite well!

These are all of our nerd-tastic members.  Who is your favorite?  Who wins the Iota Blog Favorite Spirit Day Award?

Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge... Tau Beta Style

For those of you who never though it would happen, Tau Beta Started a Dodge Ball Team today!  In the last few years Iota intramural sports have really taken off!  We got really into playing Flag Football in the fall and Basketball in the spring, and this semester we're branching out with dodge ball.  Needless to say, we're (dodge)ballers. Below is a picture of the wonderful ladies that participated tonight! The way intramural Dodgeball works is its best 2 out of 3 games.  We lost the first game and then tied the second.  Next time we will win them all.
Picture
We've got some serious raw dodgeball talent here! I think we've found our sport! I know you might be thinking, "Um, y'all lost," but to you I say, "Shhh." We were still the better team! And we are still awesome!  After the first game of the night was over those of us who didn't sign up to play were sad, so maybe next year we will super dominate with a gigantic team.  Can you imagine all of us playing dodgeball?  Don't think about it too hard...

Leanna and Christina ended up being our last standing players in the two games that were played, and held their own very well. Mad props to the two of them! They should get some sort of sticker or something.

ALSO! Did you notice the super cool blue BUGWB shirts they are wearing?  Well, we (Beta Alpha and Iota) ordered the band shirts in our colors this year.  We wanted something that united us as organizations, but still within the band to show that we are here for The Golden Wave Band (... I'm never going to get used to the name change from BUGWB to 'GWB').  Conveniently they are super fly Nike Dry Fit shirts so they double very well as intramural shirts.

Thanks for Keeping up with us!

Service Update!

Hey everyone!
I'm Leanna, the service committee chair for this Fall Semester!
I'm so excited to tell you about all that my committee and I have been working on!

First, we are trying a new system with how game-days work. Instead of having every Tau Beta and K Psi show up, we have 9 Tau Beta's and 13 K Psi's. I remember last year when I went to "Be a Tau Beta Day," there was a LOT of just "sitting around." We did this because we thought that it would make Game Day go more smoothly. Also, the people who aren't required can take some Rushees with them to the game and get to bond with them in that way!

Also, we are having a HUGE service project in September (September 10) where we are doing the "Scouting for Music" service project. It's going to be for Juniors and Cadettes of the Central Texas Region and they will be able to come and get all that needs to be done for each group to get their 2 music badges! How exciting!!

We are also working on some fundraiser ideas (Brittany has mainly) and I will tell you more about those later when we have them all figured out!!

Last but not least! We have been working on the tradition "Parent's Weekend Shirts." I'm going to post the link underneath so you guys can go check it out and support Tau Beta! You can order them in White, Forest, or Gold! Also, we even have a shirt without "Parent" that you could order :)
ALUMNI!- We WILL ship your order to you! If you want it shipped to you, please e-mail Heather_McGowan@baylor.edu

Thanks so much!

Band Week Update!

8/18/2011

It's band week, band week gotta get down on band week.  Everybody's looking forward to the weekend...

Ok that's enough Rebecca Black for now, but seriously band week is awesome (and the weekend can't get here fast enough).

It's been a long week but I'll try to capture the bigger parts of it here.  Everything's mostly run as planned and how it normally goes.  We met early on Monday morning and helped move all the freshman into their dorms which was awesome.  This is always something we love doing because it gives us a chance to get to know the freshman a little bit before any official band business starts up.

From there we had our check in and our first music rehearsal which was awesome! Check ins this year actually included business time because we now have the band fees as a part of our Baylor bill, so that made it much easier logistically for all of the Tau Beta Sigma members since we didn't actually have to deal with any business time at all!  We ended up being able to hand out shoes and shirts to each person with their name tags.  It was awesome.

The next two days were basically marching, music, marching, and repeat.
Picture
The band this year is 284 members large! It ridiculous! We only actually all sat on stage for one rehearsal because we don't actually fit.  It was wonderful.  It's officially happened, BUGWB is too big for Jones Hall.  c:  Does anyone else feel a sense of pride with that statement?  Because I sure do!
Picture
I also managed to catch a picture of one of the drum majors doing what she does best in rehearsal:  Looking pretty. Most of the time the staff tries really hard to make it look like they are being busy.  I just managed to catch Emily not looking busy.  <3
Picture
During todays rehearsal the directors actually did something really cool and they had a business time meeting where they let the presidents of both Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma stand up and talk for a little bit about what the different organizations are.  Jeanne did a great job speaking about Iota!  We have actually had a lot of interest already during just band week which is awesome!  Our first rush type thing is next week, so we'll see how many people go.

Jeanne did manage to get slightly distracted by me taking pictures of her while she was talking and she awkwardly posed for a picture while on stage in front of the whole band.  Great speaking skills Jeanne.  I just wanted to share this picture with all of you because it came out horribly since I was laughing and she was moving, so it was an awkward moment for 284 people that really wasn't worth it in the end.
Picture
Thanks for reading you guys, and I'll try to have another band week update some time soon!  Tonight is the traditional band unity night where we all go bowling together, so maybe I'll catch some cool pictures and have a funny story to tell.
