Sisters and Friends,

This year I was blessed with being the delegate for the Iota chapter of Tau Beta Sigma at Baylor University at the 2013 National Convention. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I couldn’t be happier that I was able to go!

There was so much going on during the five days I was there. As some of you know, our Southwest District President, and my big sister, was there representing the Iota chapter too! We were all busy for about 17 hours each day! We had a multitude of activities for us to do, including many workshops, where I’ve learned a lot of information on how to make our chapter better than it is, even now.

We were also blessed with being able to listen to the National Intercollegiate Band play, as well as the US Coast Guard Band, both which were absolutely mind-blowing! Famous composer John Mackey was there with the NIB, and he revealed a newly composed piece and we witnessed its first performance. I was completely in awe with the talent of Mr. Mackey and the band.

The US Coast Guard band, obviously, was just as incredible. They’re such a large group of experienced and talented musicians, and knowing that they’re serving our great country always brings tears to my eyes. They also had a song dedicated to a tuba solo, which was the best song ever, not that I’m biased or anything!

One day we had a Wava Memorial Service. I never got the pleasure of meeting Wava, but it was truly a beautiful thing to see all those who loved her. I got to know her through others, and to see her spirit living on through this organization and those that knew her, even just slightly, is so very inspiring.

At banquet, many pictures were taken. We had a great dinner, heard many great speeches, and afterwards there was a dance where everyone I met just had a great relaxing, yet energetic, time. It lasted for a long time, and I can honestly say it helped make NatCon my best memory from this summer.

Since I’m still in my first year of being a sister, I can say this trip has been beyond stimulating and motivating to help push me to be a better addition to the sisterhood. The experiences I had at this convention make me want to go to the ones in my future, whether as delegate or not. I believe it’s something everyone should go to if they can. So much is learned and gained, and it’s all great to realize what you’re a part of and how it is so much more than just serving the band at your school.
